A Journal Entry, 20XX AD
Before we even knew what was going on, they turned Alpha Centauri to liquid shit. I don’t mean Fort Brasta on Centauri Prime. I don’t mean Centauri Prime. I mean the whole goddamn star system- they demolished only enough of Brasta to punch through to Alpha Centauri A itself, and sent it into full on supernova, engulfing and extinguishing all life in the system.
Brasta of course sent us warning before they were all vaporized. Thanks to FTL technology, the word got here with plenty of time for us to grab some popcorn and watch Alpha Centauri ignite in the night sky. Scientists are saying in about 40 years we’ll have the longest meteor shower ever as pieces of the dead star and debris from the system will bombard Earth for at least a constant 50 years. Nice to know our grandchildren will get to grow up with being showered by the carnage of their people and simply not know it any other way.
People are still arguing over the how and why of the attack. The most credible theory is that they were lured here by our FTL signals. The science geeks have already found a way to pinpoint the source of such signals with amazing accuracy, so it would make sense that a hostile alien race with the technology to blow up an entire goddamn star would have been able to do the same thing. As for the “whyâ€, well, that has us all stumped. Normally, in war, there’s a motive: accumulation of territory, increase of influence, wealth. We saw none of these when Alpha Centauri was obliterated. We’ve received no transmissions from our attackers. They didn’t take or demand anything; they just destroyed the system without breaking their stride, and now they’re headed for us.
Aside from our own panicked transmissions, the FTL radio is silent. The only evidence that the hostiles even exist is an alarming number of blips on the long-range radar, growing ever closer. Intel says they’ll be here within a month, which, while more than enough time for the civilians to go insane from living in fear, will be hardly enough time for the military on all nine planets to fully organize. Anything we can’t set up to fire within a month might as well be scrap metal.
We saw them coming with as much advance warning as our technology could afford us, and still we’re going to get caught with our pants down. It’s hardly fair.
I’m already resigned to our fate as a species. I just hope they don’t annihilate us all before I get my turn at the guns.
A classic “last desperate attempt at fighting back” scenario. With your history in games and twisted sense of humor, this will be so great to play.
